Back in 2019, Proudly Portugal was born. In 2023, it’s back with a campaign refresh to showcase Portugal as more than an LGBTI+-friendly country to visit but also as a place to relocate, invest or work.

We present you with a proudly LGBTI+ campaign refresh!

Over the last two decades, Portugal set in motion a series of initiatives to expand the visibility of the LGTBI+ community. In addition, substantial changes in the country’s legal framework were made, from laws protecting against discrimination based on sexual orientation to same-sex marriage or the rights to gender self-discrimination of transgender people.

The culmination of these ventures led to Portugal gaining worldwide recognition as one of the community’s safest and most inclusive countries. In this landscape, Variações – Associação de Comércio e Turismo LGBTI+ de Portugal, with the support of Portugal’s Tourism Board (Turismo de Portugal), developed back in 2019 the first campaign to present Portugal as one of the leading LGBTI+ travel destinations.

2019: the first Proudly Portugal campaign

Named “Portugal. Travel to Feel”, the first Proudly Portugal campaign took place between November 2019 and June 2020.

The primary goal of the campaign was to position Portugal as a leading LGBTI+ travel destination. Creating an online community and sharing the best of what Portugal has to offer was a unique experience!

Since then, things have been gradually increasing in some areas, such as tourism. However, there is still a lot to do, specifically when discussing developing products or services targeted at the LGBTI+ community.

2013: a Proudly Portugal comeback!

While in 2019, our mission with “Portugal. Travel to Feel” was only to showcase how Portugal was one of the best places for the LGBTI+-travellers to visit, this year, we want to go a bit further and show how much one can do in this beautiful country. In short, several opportunities remain to be explored in Portugal, and we want to show you how you can be a part of it!

With Proudly Portugal’s comeback, we want to continue presenting you the nicest wonders in Portugal, not just as an open and accepting country to the LGBTI+ community but also as a place to explore business and investment possibilities!

So what prompted this new segment?

Portugal is regarded as one of the top LGBTI+-friendly locations due to its sunny days, security, cost of living and supportive government regulations, making it an attractive country for the community.

Hand in hand, and since the pandemic, people are looking even more for a peaceful and safe country to live in or work as digital nomads. Well, Portugal remains at the top of the list, recognised as the world’s best country for digital nomads.

In October 2022, Portugal launched a new one-year digital nomad visa, allowing remote workers to be granted year-long access to work in Portugal so long as they meet the requirements.

Since then, it has approved 200 digital nomad visas. The majority of applications come from Brazil, the UK, and the USA, according to the country’s Ministry of Affairs.

Portugal is on its way to establishing itself internationally as a reference destination in this segment.

If you’re considering relocating, investing in a new business, or working remotely in a slow-paced destination, you know what to do!

Come to Portugal. We would proudly have you here!
